Type 1 children’s app shortlisted for top award
A new healthcare app aimed at helping children with Type 1 diabetes better manage their condition has been shortlisted in the Health Service Journal (HSJ) Value in Healthcare Awards.
Monster Manor, a free app for children with Type 1 diabetes to make blood glucose testing more fun, was developed through a partnership of Ayogo, Diabetes UK, Oxford Academic Health Science Network and Sanofi Diabetes. It is in the running in the Value and Improvement in Medical Technology category.
Ayogo, working with Diabetes UK and Sanofi Diabetes, developed Monster Manor to encourage children to test and record their blood glucose levels on a more regular basis. Only 15 per cent of young children manage to achieve their blood glucose targets.
Simon O’Neill, Director of Health Intelligence and Professional Liaison at Diabetes UK, said: “Parents tell us that their children often find regular blood glucose monitoring very hard to accept and it can often become a source of tension in families.
“By turning the testing into a game we hope it will encourage young children with diabetes to manage their condition more effectively and help them succeed in achieving tighter blood glucose control in their early years. In turn this would help them reduce the risk of developing the serious complications associated with diabetes in later life.”
The award winners will be announced on 23 September 2014 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
The shortlisted organisations, chosen from a record number of entries, will now complete presentations and interviews to a judging panel made up senior and influential figures from the health sector.
The new HSJ Value in Healthcare Awards seek to recognise and reward outstanding efficiency and improvement by the NHS. A successor to the HSJ Efficiency Awards, the Value in Healthcare Awards continue to recognise excellent use of resources. But they also seek out examples of demonstrable improvement in outcomes, both within back office functions and clinical initiatives.
