The winners of the 2017 Celebrating DESMOND Annual Awards Programme have been announced.

Now in its fourth year, there was a significant number of entries to the awards, created to reward excellence and share learning across the DESMOND community.

DESMOND is the collaborative name for a family of group self management education modules, toolkits and care pathways for people with, or at risk of, type 2 diabetes.

The DESMOND Programme offers training and quality assurance for healthcare professionals and lay Educators to deliver any of the DESMOND modules and toolkits to people in their local communities.

Bernie Stribling, director of the DESMOND Programme, said: “We introduced the awards to reward excellence in the DESMOND community and also to highlight, champion and celebrate good practice.

“Once again this year we had significant interest from the DESMOND community and the standards were high with a degree of excellence demonstrated by many of the entries.

“The Celebrating DESMOND awards always make me hugely proud of all of the incredible work being carried out across the country in type 2 diabetes structured education. Well done to everyone who entered.”

The winners, who were announced to coincide with World Diabetes Day, were:

Team of the Year

South Tees Community Diabetes Team

Innovation Award

The Northern Health and Social Care Trust

Educator of the Year

Sarah Yolasan from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust

Excellence Award

South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust

Celebrating DESMOND is about rewarding and celebrating the tremendous efforts of DESMOND Educators and teams across the country who are working to improve the lives of people with type 2 diabetes.

As well as recognising excellence, we think the annual competition is a great way to  promote engagement and encourage DESMOND teams to ensure key learning is disseminated across our community.
