Healthcare professionals who work with children who have diabetes are being urged to attend an online webinar about Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) management this month.

The online event is being hosted by the Association of Children’s Diabetes Clinicians (ACDC) and will take place on Friday, March 12. Webinars will remain on the ACDC website for four weeks from the date it is published.

Dr Nicole Glaser, from the University of California and who was the chief investigator on the PECARN FLUID trial will present on her findings on DKA  and fluid management in children.

Dr Chizo Agwu, Vice Chair of the NICE Diabetes Guideline Committee, will then give a talk about the NICE Update on DKA Management and she will also form part of an expert panel on Thursday, March 25 when attendees can participate in a live ZOOM question and answer session.

She will be joined by Dr Neil Wright Paediatric Endocrinologist, Dr Rum Thomas Paediatric Intensivist and Carole Gelder Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse who was part of the NICE Diabetes Guideline Committee,. It will be chaired by Associate Professor May Ng, ACDC Chair.

Associate Professor May Ng said: “DKA is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in childhood diabetes and we know the primary cause of DKA is absolute or relative insulin deficiency. NICE has issued updated guidelines published in December 2020 in relation to DKA management in children. It is important that healthcare professionals who treat children with DKA are aware of the recommended changes.”
