Excellence in Type 2 diabetes structured education has been recognised in the annual DESMOND awards.

Bernie Stribling, director of the DESMOND Programme, said the five winning entries showed “star quality” and the awards in general demonstrated a “wealth of good practice”.

An extra category, the Innovation Award, was added due to the calibre of the entries.

The winners have been revealed today to mark World Diabetes Day, which this year has a ‘healthy living’ message relating to the prevention of Type 2 diabetes and the effective management of diabetes to avoid complications.

They include:

  • Team of the Year – Locala Community Partnerships
  • Educator of the Year – Ciara Heverin, Galway University Hospitals and Galway, Roscommon PCCC
  • Excellence Award – Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
  • Innovation Award – Lancashire Care Foundation Trust
  • Patient of the Year – Clare nominated by Eleanor Gemmell, Great Yarmouth and Waveney CCG

Bernie said: “The standard was high with a degree of excellence demonstrated by many of the entries. However, the winners showed ‘star quality’. We were so impressed with some of the submissions, we introduced a new category, the Innovation Award.

“It was clear from the all of the entries that DESMOND is making a difference to the lives of people with, and at risk of, Type 2 diabetes, with teams going above and beyond in delivering the DESMOND Programme. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who entered.”

Structured education programmes are a proven method to enable supported self-care in diabetes. DESMOND is the collaborative name for a family of group self-management education modules, toolkits and care pathways for people with, or at risk of, Type 2 diabetes.

The DESMOND Programme offers training and quality assurance for healthcare professionals and lay educators to deliver any of the DESMOND modules and toolkits to people in their communities.

DESMOND has recently released its Injectable Therapies Toolkit containing everything needed to help those with Type 2 diabetes on Insulin or GLP-1 therapy, who are struggling to gain control of their blood glucose levels.
