Free type 1 diabetes technology event to be live streamed
A type 1 diabetes and technology conference being live streamed online so people from all round the world can access it.
The Type 1 and Tech conference is free and has been organised in partnership with the Diabetes Research Unit Cymru, the Diabetes UK Cymru and Swansea University and takes place on Saturday, November 9.
It aims to give people living with diabetes a greater understanding of the diverse technology available to them, how it might benefit them and how to access it.
Wales is leading the way on type 1 diabetes technology, as the first country in the UK to offer flash glucose monitoring on prescription across all health boards.
Leading experts, healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes will discuss new devices, pioneering ideas and the array of technology currently available.
There will be sessions specifically on paediatric type 1 diabetes care, managing the condition during pregnancy, diabetes-related apps and the potential positive and negative impact of social media on mental health and life with the condition.
The event has seen a significant number of registrations, as well as international appeal this year, with hundreds of people from across the UK and as far afield as Spain, South Africa and Australia already registered to tune in online.
Type 1 diabetes is a complex, lifelong condition that currently affects around 19,000 people in Wales.
Dai Williams, National Director of Diabetes UK Cymru, said: “Last year’s event was a huge success and it’s great to see even more people, from across the globe, already registered for this year’s conference.
“Wales is leading the way on type 1 diabetes technology, as the first country in the UK to offer flash glucose monitoring on prescription across all health boards. We want to continue this excellent reputation by bringing renowned clinicians and experts, and people living with type 1 diabetes, together here in Wales to share the latest insight. From insulin pumps to closed loop systems, apps and social media, this free event really will offer something for everyone.
“Technology can have a life-changing impact on the way people manage their Type 1 diabetes. But we know that trying to find out about the devices available and whether they might work for you can feel overwhelming.
“By streaming the event live we can make sure everyone, wherever they are, has the opportunity to join the conversation, get up to speed with the developments and discussions surrounding diabetes technology and learn how it might benefit their diabetes management.”
