GP talks diabetes research in latest Big Interview

A primary care doctor with a special interest in diabetes has shared how he ventured into the world of research and what attracted him to diabetes. 

Dr Sam Seidu, a practising GP and Clinical Professor in Primary Care Diabetes and Cardio-metabolic Medicine at the University of Leicester, spoke to the Diabetes Times Editor Oliver Jelley as part of the latest Big Interview.

Alongside his primary care commitments, Dr Seidu has published more than 120 research papers.

He said: “Doing the research as well as seeing patients maximises what I am able to offer. It is using my time efficiently to do a lot more than one thing.”

Conducting his research at the Leicester Diabetes Centre, Dr Seidu added: “My hands are full as I have several studies on my plate.

“I have got a lot going on, but I have a fantastic team of researchers around me who are all supporting.”

Dr Seidu is also the Chairman for the Research for Primary Care Diabetes Europe and a committee member for the Primary Care Diabetes Society.

In 2021, he picked up an Award for Outstanding Early Career Researchers in UK and Ireland by the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Society for Academic Primary Care.

“It was an honour to be recognised by the Royal College,” said Dr Seidu. He continued: “It came as a huge surprise. It gave us a lot of exposure of the work we were doing.”
