A total of 136 sites across the UK have been taking part in Hypo Awareness Week.

The annual campaign gives healthcare professionals and the diabetes community the opportunity to discuss hypoglycaemia in hospitals and primary care settings. This year, it has been running between October 3 and 9.

The theme for this year’s campaign was ‘Controlling Diabetes, Avoiding Hypos’.

A total of 23 primary care sites, four networks and one care home signed up to take part and the rest of the participating sites were hospitals from all over the country.

Hypo Awareness Week was first staged locally in Portsmouth hospitals in April 2012 before being rolled out nationally by NHS Diabetes in the following August.

Hospitals and primary care organisations registered prior to the event and were sent a link to an electronic pack of materials.

The teams were then encouraged to hold activities and training throughout the week, educating other healthcare professionals about hypos and how to prevent them.

Participants were given access to a suite of materials which was created and placed on a dedicated website page.

The pack included include posters, leaflets, guidelines, logos, screensavers, a press release template as well as instructions to give participants ideas and tips on how to organise the week.

This year t-shirts and posters were issued to those who wanted them.
