An international speaker and expert on Charcot foot will present at a footcare conference later this month.

Professor William Jeffcoate has been lined up to talk at the 4th Northern Diabetes Footsore Clinical Symposium on Tuesday, October 10 at the Durham Centre.

Dr Rahul Nayar, chair of the Northern Diabetes Foot Care Network, said: “We have done some amazing work over the last four years on promoting footcare and the risk of amputations in people with diabetes. We were a national outlier when it came to major amputations, but steadily with fantastic engagement across the various communities, we have reduced our major amputation rates by approximately 40 per cent  – there is still much to do but this achievement is a real group effort.

“The symposium is a reflection of what we have achieved and what clinical aspects we want to address next, with that in mind we have invited Professor William Jeffcoate an international speaker and expert on Charcot foot and have local experts addressing the multi-disciplinary nature of diabetes footcare.”

The aim of the event is to ensure all attendees are competent in diabetes foot care management. The skills and knowledge will enable safer care for people with diabetes across the northern region.

Three interactive workshops have been planned for delegates. They include:

  • Offloading the Foot: Dr Simon Ashwell, Consultant Diabetologist & Chris Aitkins, Podiatrist, James Cook University Hospital, South Tees Hospitals
  • Vascular Intervention & Radiology: Ian Nichol, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, James Cook University Hospital, South Tees Hospitals
  • Diabetes Amputation & Rehabilitation: Emma Fraser, Specialist Physiotherapist & Ashleigh Duffy, Specialist Physiotherapist, City Hospitals Sunderland FT
