The Acute Medicine and Diabetes and Endocrinology teams are looking for enthusiastic and ambitious colleague to join this Trust in an 8 PA joint appointment between the Departments of Diabetes & Endocrinology and the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU)

The successful candidate will join dynamic and forward thinking teams on a recently modernised acute medical unit for 4 sessions a week and with 4 sessions a week dedicated to diabetes and endocrinology.

The Diabetes and Endocrinology team of 11 Consultants, including 5 substantive or honorary Chairs, is undergoing a planned service expansion in the provision of continuous subcutaneous insulin pump, young adult and transition diabetes services an expanded inpatient diabetes service and 7 day service from a dedicated inpatient diabetes hub. The new appointment will allow the restructuring of job plans to facilitate more input to more accurate risk based streaming and new service delivery models, and to support the diabetes in-patient specialist team. The Dept. operates a complex intermediate diabetes service with 16 Consultants and nurse specialists directly supporting all 72 local practices. The Endocrine service is supported by a busy CIU with a full range of dynamic testing and IPSS, an ESN led Thyroid tele clinic, monthly NET MDT, Thyroid nodule clinics, a nationally recognised bone and calcium service, and a regular MDT with Queens Square for the pituitary tumour pathway. The Dept. is a tertiary referral centre for adrenal disorders. All ENDO referrals follow clearly defined pathways with pre clinic bloods to reduce follow ups.

Other strong subspecialty interests are obesity, reproductive endocrinology and maternal medicine. The applicant would be expected to support in developing these clinical services as part of the team, and to develop their own specialist interest over time. The post is on a 1:9 on call rota for Endo /Diabetes/General Medicine, and does not involve weekend or overnight cover for AMU

The Acute Medical Unit is one of the busiest single hospital units in the country. The hospital serves a large catchment population of over 700,000, swollen in the summer months by many holidaymakers visiting our beautiful county. We see over 2000 patients per month, of which about 20% are in an ambulatory setting. This takes place on the NNUH site in close co-operation with the Emergency Department, the Critical Care Complex, Coronary Care Unit, Medical Specialties and Primary Care. The ethos of “Team Working” is fundamental to the Department and the appointee must be an excellent innovator, leader and team player. We aim to have consultants taking direct calls from our community partners to enable management of as many cases as possible via ambulatory or other outpatient settings. The Hospital is investing heavily in expanding its established Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC) model which already runs 7 days/week. Our ethos is that all patients seen in AEC are “ambulatory until proven otherwise”. As a consequence, we are growing Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) models and need your expertise to help us develop a portfolio of pathways.
