People who use a specific type of insulin pump are being warned about a possible malfunction in the device.

Users of the Accu-Chek Insight system have reported some of their insulin cartridges have been leaking.

Manufacturers of the device Roche have issued a medical safety alert and said: “If inserted incorrectly, insulin can leak from the cartridge into the cartridge compartment resulting in an under-delivery of insulin which can lead to complications as e.g. a hyperglycemia.

“Such a leaking cartridge can be detected by regularly checking the pump a few hours following the cartridge change as the insulin would be visible e.g. through condensation in the pump’s cartridge compartment.”

The company said  they are now updating the system’s handling instructions and have also issued the updated step-by-step guide so healthcare professionals and users can adapt the way they use the device accordingly.
