Type 1 charity JDRF is calling on cyclists to take part in the ‘Tour de Type 1’ this summer to raise cash for diabetes research.

The ride will take place from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 July and will help support vital research into finding the cure for Type 1 diabetes. Participants can choose to replicate the entire 131 mile first stage of the race from Leeds Town Hall, or a choice of three reduced versions. The reduced versions start from Harewood House (118 miles), Kettlewell (85 miles) and Aysgarth (69 miles).

Highlights of the ride will include a visit through the delightful spa town of Harrogate and the cathedral city of Ripon. There will also be a spectacular scenic journey through the Yorkshire Dales National Park along with a stop in the market town of Hawes, home to Wensleydale cheese. Accommodation and meals will be provided including a pre-cycle and post-cycle celebratory dinner.

Doncaster resident Gareth Rowbotham, who will be participating in Tour de Type 1, said: “The chance to ride the first stage of this year’s Tour de France when it visits Yorkshire is one I couldn’t pass up! I’ll be fundraising in earnest and training hard, so that when next summer comes around, I’ll be able to taste a bit of the Tour de France magic for myself!”

“As the father of a teen with who lives with Type 1 diabetes, I have done a lot of fundraising in the past. I’ve ridden from London to Paris twice as well as riding from Whitehaven to Newcastle all in search of a cure.”

The 400,000 people in the UK who live with Type 1 diabetes – including 29,000 children – rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions every day just to stay alive. The condition is not linked to lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise.

The first ride in June has already sold out and places are already filling for the July event so book early to avoid disappointment.
