Diabetes conference opens in Glasgow

Experts in the field of diabetes have gathered in Glasgow for the Diabetes UK Professional Conference.

The three-day annual event is taking place at the SECC and began on Wednesday, March 2.

The programme is made up of professional interest groups, workshops, ward sessions, oral abstract sessions, plenary sessions and symposia sessions.

There will be a focus on basic and clinical science, through primary and secondary care, complications, dietetics and also psychosocial aspects of diabetes.

The charity’s chief executive Chris Askew opened the conference with an introduction to delegates before the rest of the day’s activities continued.

Hands-on training

The conference attracts attendees from a wide range of backgrounds, including basic or clinical scientists, healthcare professionals, representatives of charitable or voluntary organisations, pharmaceutical representatives and medical students.

On Friday the ‘hot topic’ sessions will feature research news from the diabetes clinics around the world.

There will also be a stand-alone workshop track across all three days of the conference which will provide hands-on training and structured education from leading experts, including psychosocial and all aspects of diabetes care.

Calum Sutherland, the chair of the Professional Conference Organising Committee and reader at the University of Dundee, said: “The committee has worked hard to develop a novel and timely programme for 2016.

“We have incorporated suggestions from colleagues and the committee to provide seven tracks of sessions over three days that address the latest research findings, clinical experience and national guidelines covering the many diabetes-associated health professions.”
