A “game-changing” artificial pancreas has helped an Austrian man living with type 1 diabetes run nine marathons in nine days across nine different countries.

Markus Sauer, 32, was able to complete this ultra-marathon challenge thanks to his CamAPS FX – an advanced adaptive hybrid closed-loop algorithm that automatically adjusts insulin delivery on your insulin pump based on your sensor glucose readings.

CamAPS FX is the world’s first automated insulin delivery app and its sophisticated ability to fine-tune insulin delivery made it possible for Markus to run each marathon without worrying about his glucose levels.

He said: “CamAPS FX made it much easier for me to run. I also used the eas-off and boost settings during the marathons to control my sugars.

“I decided to do this ultra-marathon challenge because I wanted to know if it was possible to do it.”

He added: “In March, I read that two guys did the same challenge with half marathons, so I decided to run the whole distance.”

The 32-year-old has been living with type 1 diabetes since he was 23. Before CamAPS FX, Markus was using an insulin pump without the support of a closed-loop algorithm controlling the insulin delivery.

He noted: “From the moment I changed to CamAPS FX, my long-term sugar value (HbA1c) changed positively, and my diabetes therapy satisfaction improved.

“I never want to go back to normal pump therapy. Thank you CamDiab for inventing this game-changing app.”
