England international rugby player Chris Pennell has been named as an official celebrity supporter for Diabetes UK.

The Worcester Warriors full-back will join a host of famous faces to promote the work of the UK’s leading diabetes charity, including the likes of former Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave, television presenter Phillip Schofield and X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

Pennell, who made his England debut against New Zealand in June, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes by Warriors’ club doctors in 2006.

After coming to terms with the condition, the 27-year-old has gone on to flourish at Sixways and was nominated for Aviva Premiership Player of the Season earlier this year.

Chris said: “I am delighted to become an ambassador for Diabetes UK as it is a charity which has a real impact on the people it works with. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, I thought I would have to look for a career outside of professional rugby.

If the condition is managed correctly it shouldn’t be a barrier for anyone

“But I soon realised that, if the condition is managed correctly, it is something that shouldn’t be a barrier for anyone. Coming to terms with diabetes can be difficult but people who suffer from the condition can now achieve in any walk of life.”

Barbara Young, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, said: “We are delighted to have Chris on board to support the vital work that Diabetes UK does. Chris is a fantastic role model to young people with diabetes, and through his career as a top sportsman, has proven that having diabetes does not have to hold you back from anything. We look forward to working with Chris to help inspire other young people with diabetes and help them achieve everything they want to.”
