South Northamptonshire MP featured in latest Big Interview
The importance of raising awareness of diabetes on a national scale was discussed by the South Northamptonshire Member of Parliament in the latest online interview for the Diabetes Times.
Sarah Bool, Conservative MP, spoke with DT editor Oliver Jelley about her shock type 1 diabetes diagnosis in 2021 and the misrepresentation of the condition in the media.
The pair also look at the impact of diabetes technology, with Sarah campaigning in Parliament for more funding and training on hybrid closed-loop (HCL) systems.
She said: “Diabetes is not given the national spotlight. We need our role models out there in all different shapes and sizes who still have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. We are now creating awareness, and this is where we are going to change the discussion.”
Sarah uses a pump system with an HCL and has revealed it has “revolutionised” how she manages her type 1 diabetes. She is now advocating for greater use of technology to help people better manage the condition.
“I am very much a fan of preventative medicines and preventative treatments because with type 1 diabetes we can prevent complications,” said Sarah.
She added: “Just because we have this condition does not mean that we can’t go on to do the best, or what we want to do. We just need a little bit of help to get there.”
