Welsh-based company Afon Technology to sign manufacturing contract with Sony UK Technology Centre
Afon Technology Ltd, a pioneering company based in Caldicot, Monmouthshire, is finalising a landmark manufacturing agreement with Sony UK Technology Centre (TEC) Limited to produce its groundbreaking, innovative and market-leading medical device.
The agreement which is currently in discussion will see Sony UK TEC manufacture Afon Technology’s Glucowear™ – the world’s first non-invasive, real-time wearable blood glucose indicator which is tipped to improve the lives of people with diabetes.
With more than 830 million people living with diabetes globally, Glucowear™ offers a groundbreaking solution for blood glucose indication and represents a major leap forward in comfort, convenience, and continuous diabetes management.
This innovative, non-invasive device is worn on the underside of the wrist and uses Bluetooth™ technology to transmit real-time glucose data to a companion app. Compatible with smartphones, smartwatches and tablets, the app displays personalised glucose trends and alerts users to high or low glucose levels, all without breaking the skin.
Sabih Chaudhry, CEO of Afon Technology Limited, said: “The current trial agreement we have with Sony UK TEC marks a pivotal moment in our journey to transform diabetes management.
“Partnering with such a globally respected manufacturer will give us the capability and confidence to bring Glucowear™ to market at scale, ensuring the highest standards of regulatory compliance, product quality, and technical innovation.”
He added: “We would like to thank Sony UK TEC in its recognition of our innovation, in conjunction with the credibility this brings from the manufacturing expertise of Sony. We are one step closer to delivering a truly life-changing solution to millions of people living with diabetes worldwide.”
Ian Worgan, General Manager for Supply Chain and Business Development at Sony UK TEC, said: “As a Wales-based manufacturer, we’re excited to work with an innovative Welsh company which is bringing emerging technologies to market.

Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said:
“We are fostering a vibrant innovation culture here in Wales, which is pushing the boundaries of science and tackling critical challenges in areas such as climate change, industrial competitiveness, and medical treatment.
“Afon Technology’s pioneering work benefitted from the EU’s flagship research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe, after Welsh Government lobbied continued involvement post Brexit, and this agreement with technology powerhouse Sony is a strong endorsement of its potential to change the lives of those living with diabetes.”
