A new Type 2 diabetes structured education programme is now available to be commissioned by health providers and bought directly by people with the condition.

The ‘Diabetes Manual Programme’ from Successful Diabetes is now available in the UK under license from Warwick University and in association with the original author and lead researcher of the programme Professor Jackie Sturt of Kings College London.

It is a 12-week learning programme which meets all the criteria for a structured education programme recommended by NICE and Diabetes UK.

The programme consists of a diabetes manual/workbook, structured into two-weekly stages full of varied, practical and motivating activities, plus audio-based relaxation techniques. These are complemented by a personal introduction and planned support from a trained Diabetes Manual Complete Coach.

It aims to increase confidence and reduce stress and diabetes-related problems in a bid to improve clinical and psychological outcomes.

Rosie Walker, owner and Director of Successful Diabetes said: “We guarantee that people who purchase Diabetes Manual Complete will have an enjoyable, effective and supported learning experience, which will give them the skills and knowledge to manage their diabetes confidently. This education will complement and enhance the clinical care they receive from their local health professionals.

“Although this type of education is recommended to be provided in the NHS, it is clearly not yet a commissioning priority. The last two National Diabetes Audits show that only a vanishingly small number of people receive it, or are even referred for it.”
