New research suggests that continuous glucose monitoring is associated with sustained improvements in HbA1c in people with later-onset type 1 diabetes and individuals with type 2 diabetes using insulin.

Latest evidence also shows a clear pattern of reduced risk of admission to hospital for hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia events.

A retrospective observational cohort study within the Veterans Affairs Health Care System was used to compare glucose control and hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia hospital admissions.

The study shows that declines in HbA1c were significantly greater in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) users with type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes compared to nonusers with the conditions.

Percentages of people achieving HbA1c <8 and <9 per cent after 12 months were greater in CGM users, the research reports.

The results state: “In type 1 diabetes, CGM initiation was associated with significantly reduced risk of hypoglycaemia and all-cause hospitalisation.

“In people with type 2 diabetes, there was a reduction in risk of hyperglycaemia in CGM users and all-cause hospitalisation.”
