Debbie Hicks is stepping down as Chair of Trend Diabetes after almost two decades with the organisation, as she prepares to embark on a new chapter travelling the world and ticking off her bucket list.

Debbie has been at the heart of Trend Diabetes since its beginnings in 2009, when she and co-founder June James established the organisation, formerly known as Trend UK.

Since then, she has played a central role in developing Trend Diabetes and building its programme of educational events, conferences and resources for healthcare professionals working in diabetes.

Reflecting on her decision, Debbie said she was leaving with “mixed emotions” but felt the time was right to take a different path.

“Since 2009 I have been involved with Trend Diabetes, formerly known as Trend UK – initially as its creator and latterly as owner and chair,” she said.

“However, the time has come for me to travel the world and tick off things on my bucket list!”

Debbie began her nursing career in 1978 and said that over the past 36 years she had been privileged to meet “some amazing people” in many different situations and countries, united by a commitment to improving care for people living with diabetes.

She added: “My nursing career, which began in 1978, has provided me with many anecdotes that could easily fill a chapter or two! Who knows what that may lead to, but the time is right for me to take a different path away from diabetes and a slower pace in which to navigate the next few years of life.”

And Debbie already has plenty planned for her next chapter. She and her husband have trips to Brazil, China and Japan booked, alongside plans to explore more of the UK and the wider world. She has also recently enrolled on a reflexology course, with willing volunteers ready to help her practise her new skills.

Debbie will still chair the Trend Diabetes conferences throughout 2027, meaning she will remain involved with the organisation for the time being and have the opportunity to see many of the colleagues and friends she has worked with over the years.

Debbie said: “I will miss many people within the field of diabetes, but I hope to maintain contact with some of you special ones – you know who you are! I wish you all health, wealth and happiness.”

Trend Diabetes thanked Debbie for her “incredible contribution, dedication and friendship” and for the lasting contribution she has made to the organisation and the wider diabetes community.

Debbie’s departure as chair marks the end of a significant chapter for Trend Diabetes, with committee member Erica Richardson taking on the role of chair with immediate effect.
