Healthcare professionals are being reminded that insulin pen needles previously branded BD are now available under new embecta product names and packaging, with the needles themselves remaining unchanged.

Following the transition, embecta has updated the branding across its insulin pen needle portfolio, introducing new product names and packaging while retaining the same needles that people living with diabetes are familiar with.

The message behind the transition is simple: same trusted needle, new name and packaging.

As part of the changes, healthcare professionals are being encouraged to ensure that repeat prescriptions reflect the updated embecta product names to help maintain continuity of supply.

For example, prescriptions should now specify embecta Micro-Fine Ultra™ 4mm or Viva 4mm, where appropriate, rather than using the previous BD branding.

Although the appearance of the packaging and product names has changed, embecta has confirmed that the needles themselves remain the same.

This means healthcare professionals can reassure patients who may be concerned about receiving unfamiliar packaging or seeing a different product name on their prescription.

GPs, diabetes specialist nurses, practice nurses, pharmacists and prescribing teams are encouraged to check that existing repeat prescriptions have been updated to include the correct embecta product names.

Patients should also be advised to review their repeat prescriptions and contact their GP practice or prescribing team if they still refer to BD.

The priority for healthcare professionals is to ensure patients continue to receive their usual insulin pen needles without unnecessary disruption as the new branding is introduced.
