Adults with type 1 diabetes have good glycaemic control when using multiple daily injections of insulin and intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring, academics have said.

A team of scientists assessed and compared the efficacy of advanced hybrid closed loop systems with other therapies used to treat type 1 diabetes.

Between July 2020 and March 2021, a total of 105 people were screened and 82 randomly assigned to treatment.

The researchers found that the mean HbA1C had decreased by 1.54 per cent (SD 0·73), from nine per cent to 7·3 per cent in the advanced hybrid closed loop group and 0·2 per cent in the multiple daily injections of insulin plus intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring from nine per cent to 8·9 per cent.

No diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hypoglycaemia, or serious adverse events related to study devices occurred in either groups, the findings have reported.
