A consultant physician pioneering advances in diabetes inpatient care has highlighted the importance of cross-speciality collaboration in the latest online interview for the Diabetes Times.
Dr Omar Mustafa, Chair of the Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS-IP), spoke with Diabetes Times Editor Oliver Jelley about his career in diabetes care and the work that has contributed to his international reputation in the field.
Alongside his role with the JBDS-IP, Dr Mustafa is Registrar for the Royal College of Physicians and Consultant Physician in Diabetes and General Internal Medicine at King’s College Hospital in London.
He said: “Diabetes has a number of features that attracted me. Broadly diabetes is a multi-system condition where you interact with a lot of colleagues in other specialities. It has a generalist flavour, where you can learn a lot of other things.”
With extensive experience in inpatient diabetes care, Dr Mustafa has undertaken medical training and education across the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Iraq and Egypt.

During the interview, Dr Mustafa also highlighted the upcoming JBDS-IP Conference 2026, describing it as a conference with a “unique flavour” focused on safety, digital innovation and proactive inpatient diabetes care.
Taking place on Friday, July 3, at The Grand Hotel Leicester, the event will bring together national and international speakers, and include JBDS updates, practical workshops and abstract presentations covering topics including discharge planning, safe transfers of care, diabetes technology and perioperative medicine.
The conference will also feature the inaugural Diabetes Inpatient Study Group (DISG) meeting ahead of the EASD conference in Milan. This is a small, closed meeting taking place on the evening of Thursday, July 2, in Leicester.
Dr Mustafa said: “The conference mirrors what people see in clinical practice and will provide a multidisciplinary forum for discussions and key updates.
“It will bring people together to connect and improve diabetes inpatient care wherever they are, giving them an open forum to share experiences.”
With expert speakers and a forward-looking programme, the conference is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of inpatient diabetes care in the UK and beyond.
