Using continuous glucose monitoring to diagnose pregnant women with gestational diabetes is more effective than the standard oral glucose tolerance test, research has demonstrated.

A team of academics assessed the acceptability, feasibility, and accuracy of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as a diagnostic test for gestational diabetes.

During the study, the researchers examined the health outcomes of 73 pregnant women who completed CGM for a week and 34 expecting mothers who concurrently underwent an oral glucose tolerance test.

They found that CGM was acceptable and generally well-tolerated, with skin irritation and itchiness the only adverse event.

The findings have stated: “An oral glucose tolerance test is dated and has been reported as inconvenient for women as well as poorly reproducible and reliable.”

Future research is needed to determine cut-off values for CGM-defined and oral glucose tolerance test-independent screening criteria for gestational diabetes.
