DESMOND awards deadline approaches
DESMOND teams have one week left to enter a new annual awards which aims to celebrate the Type 2 diabetes structured education programme.
Celebrating DESMOND launched in September and culminates in the prize giving on World Diabetes Day 2014, which takes place on November 14. Entries close at midnight on Friday, October 31.
It aims to reward excellence and share good practice through the four categories, including:
- Team of the Year
- Educator of the Year
- Patient of the Year
- Excellence Award.
Bernie Stribling, DESMOND Director, said: “We would like to invite all the DESMOND sites to take part in our new Celebrating DESMOND Annual Awards Programme.
“This new awards programme represents an ideal opportunity to promote the good work being carried out across the country in Type 2 diabetes structured education.
This new awards programme represents an ideal opportunity to promote the good work
“With diabetes prevalence continuing to rise, the NHS is faced with a huge challenge. We believe structured diabetes education is the only long-term answer and this annual awards aims to celebrate the good work being carried out in this field across the NHS.”
As well as rewarding excellence, DESMOND will also be using the awards as an opportunity to promote engagement and encourage teams to ensure key learning is disseminated across our community.
A judging panel comprising of senior members of the DESMOND National Office will be convened to pick the winners and runners up for each category. As well as the overall winners, there will also be special merit awards. Prizes will include a certificate and a trophy.
Structured education programmes are a proven method to enable supported self-care in diabetes. Most programmes are delivered in a group to increase healthcare professional contact time and also encourage positive interactions between group members.
There are agreed criteria on what constitutes structured education, which include an underpinning philosophy, being evidence-based, using a structured curriculum, being delivered by trained educators and being quality assured, with an ongoing programme to audit outcomes.
DESMOND is the collaborative name for a family of group self-management education modules, toolkits and care pathways for people with, or at risk of, Type 2 diabetes.
The DESMOND Programme offers training and quality assurance for healthcare professionals and lay educators to deliver any of the DESMOND modules and toolkits to people in their communities.
