A junior doctor with a special interest into type 1 diabetes and technology has become the latest member of the Joint British Diabetes Societies Inpatient Care (JBDS – IP) team.

Dr Parizad Avari is a ST6 Specialist Registrar in diabetes and endocrinology and a post-doctoral researcher at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Dr Avari said: “Early in my medical career, my first port of call to manage people with diabetes were the JBDS guidelines. They represent a beacon of clinical excellence, providing high confidence for safe diabetes management. With new research and innovative technologies emerging, I look forward to supporting their ongoing evolution and contributing to new updates to enhance inpatient care.”

Her main academic interests lie within the field of type 1 diabetes and novel technologies including minimally invasive glucose sensors and closed-loop insulin delivery systems.

She completed her PhD evaluating a smartphone based real-time personalised decision support system, for people with type 1 diabetes.

The unremunerated post she has fulfilled has been designed to help “refresh and update the existing guidelines” that have been produced and to help JBDS understand and appreciate the needs of junior doctors.

JBDS – IP Chair Professor Ketan Dhatariya said: “We welcome Dr Parizad Avari to the team and look forward to hearing her fresh ideas towards our guidelines.”
