Following on from the National Audit Office and Public Accounts Committee Reports in 2012 into adult diabetes services in England, the Department of Health undertook to publish a document outlining the actions that would be taken to address the issues raised in the Reports. Following 1st April 2013, responsibility for publishing the document passed to NHS England, and ‘Action for Diabetes’ was published on Friday 10th January 2014.

Action for Diabetes has been used as an opportunity to describe the actions that NHS England will take to improve clinical outcomes for adults with long term conditions, using diabetes as the example to articulate how these actions will be tailored to impact on a specific disease area.

It sets out the breadth of activity NHS England is undertaking as a direct commissioner of GP and other primary care services and as a support to CCGs in their roles as commissioners of secondary and community care, in order to improve outcomes for people with diabetes.
