An online diabetes course for midwives at the Royal College of Midwives has been launched by ABCD.

The aim of the document, a joint venture between Diabetes Care Trust (ABCD ltd) and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), was to create an outline syllabus for midwives who provide care for women with diabetes during their pregnancy.

It was written because the National Survey of Midwives showed there was a need for educational material. It is hoped the content will provide midwives with a thorough understanding of all aspects of diabetes in pregnancy from preconception counselling to post-partum care.

The module will provide students with a thorough understanding of real issues within their practice at a basic level. This project started in May 2018 and so far 320 midwives have since accessed the course with more than 56% having completed the course.

The course was written by ABCD’s Dr Umesh Dashora, a consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist and Dr Dinesh Nagi, also a consultant in diabetes and endocrinology. Jacquie Simpson and Deborah Burns, Diabetes Midwife Leads and Belfast H&SC Trust reviewed the content.
