Several aspects of diabetes care were under the spotlight at an event set up for people with the condition.

Earlier this month, the charity Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation (DRWF) hosted its 11th annual Diabetes Wellness Day in the South of England.

Held in Whiteley, Hampshire, the event brought together a wealth of information under one roof for people living with diabetes and their families.

During the event – which was held on Saturday, May 14 – an expert line up of speakers took to the stage to discuss some of the leading topics of debate in diabetes care.

Dr Mayank Patel, Consultant Physician in Diabetes, explored the key advances in diabetes medications and management since the introduction of insulin 100 years ago.

Meanwhile, the diabetes specialist dietitians Sarah Woodman, Georgette Alayyan and Lauren Holloway looked at carbohydrate groups, dose adjusting and current NHS diets, including the soup and shake diet.

Diabetes retinal screening was under the spotlight during Lisa Thain and David Matthew’s presentation and Julie Weeks, Occupational Therapist, delivered some Tai Chi taster classes.

The DRWF launched its Diabetes Wellness Days to support people living with all forms of diabetes.

It is a collaboration between the DRWF, specialist diabetes teams and regional healthcare services, complimenting and reinforcing key health messages to support improved blood glucose control and the enhanced feelings of well-being people experience after attending the events.
