NHS England is set to invest £59.5 million in the second year of the national hybrid closed-loop roll-out.

In 2024, NHS England introduced the Hybrid Closed-Loop (HCL) 5-Year Implementation Strategy — a world-first initiative that has already provided approximately 12,000 people living with type 1 diabetes with access to this life-changing technology.

This latest funding will allow more people living with type 1 diabetes to access a hybrid closed-loop this year.

The new funding will prioritise children, young people, and conception. Additionally, specific funding will be allocated for disabling hypos and haemoglobinopathies, while the pregnancy switch fund will continue to be supported.

The first-year roll-out results indicate a significant improvement in adult data quality for 2024/25.

On social media, Professor Partha Kar posted: “The delivery of NICE – National Institute for Health and Care Excellence – TA 943 continues at pace. Promise made; promise delivered. Onwards amigos, nothing less than being the best globally.”

In summer 2025, a new quarterly dashboard with demographic breakdowns will be available to enable monitoring of technology usage in the type 1 diabetes population at national, regional, ICB and trust level.
