Professor speaks of ‘privilege’ of new Editor-in-Chief role at respected diabetes journal
A diabetes professor who has been recognised for a career in research spanning 45 years has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes UK’s journal, Diabetic Medicine.
Professor Noel Morgan, Emeritus professor of Endocrine Pharmacology at the University of Exeter Medical School, has published more than 200 peer reviewed papers on diabetes research.
His work has led to a number of significant breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes treatment, including new clinical trials of anti-viral agents in treating viral infection after diabetes occurs in children.
In Professor Morgan’s new role at Diabetic Medicine, he will oversee the dissemination of research on all aspects of diabetes aimed at improving the management of people with the condition.
He will take over from Professor Nick Oliver of Imperial College London – who has led the journal’s editorial team for the last four years – on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
Professor Morgan said: “I’m honoured and delighted to have been offered the opportunity to serve as the next Editor-in-Chief of Diabetic Medicine.
“The journal is recognised as a jewel in the crown of Diabetes UK, and it is a privilege to be entrusted to lead its exceptional editorial team.
“I’m excited to ensure that Diabetic Medicine is seen as a natural home for papers reporting the highest quality and most impactful research in the diabetes field across the globe.”
Professor Morgan was conferred Emeritus status at the University of Exeter in 2024 and served as the Director of the Institute of Biomedical & Clinical Science in Exeter for 13 years.
He also holds a Lifetime achievement award by the Network of Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes (nPOD) for his contributions to diabetes research and treatment.
Dr Elizabeth Robertson, Director of Research and Clinical at Diabetes UK, said: “We are delighted to welcome Professor Noel Morgan as the new Editor-in-Chief of Diabetic Medicine, and extend our sincere thanks to Professor Nick Oliver for his outstanding leadership over the past four years. Under Professor Oliver’s guidance, the journal has grown significantly in both reach and impact, and we are deeply grateful for his dedication and service.
“Professor Morgan brings extensive expertise in diabetes and a strong commitment to advancing high-quality research, which will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen the journal’s contribution to the field. We warmly thank him for his longstanding and unwavering support of Diabetes UK.”
