Diabetes specialists came together to share research and knowledge at the inaugural Type 1 Diabetes Early Detection Summit this week.

The two-day event in Birmingham saw world-renowned experts share the practicalities of and science underpinning the rapidly changing area of screeningmonitoring and treatment of early type 1 diabetes.

Aimed at practicing healthcare professionals and multidisciplinary teams, the conference covered topics including:

  • Screening programmes which included the Italian experience, the US experience, the children’s type 1 diabetes screening programme ELSA and the Type 1 Diabetes Risk in Adults (T1DRA) Study
  • How genetic analysis can support the identification of children and adults with pre-symptomatic type 1 diabetes
  • Managing pre-symptomatic type 1 diabetes in UK clinical practice
  • The psychological impact of early detection type 1 diabetes
  • Disease modifying therapy for type 1 diabetes
  • Navigating the practicalities of accessing and delivering a 14-day therapy.

Parth Narendran, Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Birmingham, and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, was part of the organising committee. He said: “This was a fantastic meeting over two days which brought together many of the world’s experts in the field of early detection and management (including potential new therapies) of type 1 diabetes.

“This is a very exciting time for the field of type 1 diabetes, working towards a better way to manage people with the condition. We hope to repeat this meeting next year – so watch out for notifications.”

The event, which also included ‘meet the expert’ sessions, featured keynote speakers including Professor Partha Kar, Type 1 Diabetes and Technology lead for NHS England, paediatric endocrinologist Dr Marian Rewers, Executive Director of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at the University of Colorado, and Emanuele Bosi, Full Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the School of Specialisation in Internal Medicine at Vita Salute San Raffaele University, Milan.

It attracted more than 160 delegates, and was also viewed online. There are plans to repeat the event in 2026, most likely during World Diabetes Week again.
