The owner of a leading type 1 diabetes website which offers mental health support has raised £200,000 worth of supplies for people living with the condition in Ukraine.

Charlie Cawsey, founder of Type One Style, is now encouraging the diabetes community to come together to tackle the diabetes crisis in Ukraine by donating crucial supplies, including sweets, insulin, and test strips.

Individuals living with type 1 diabetes in Ukraine are now in danger of running out of essential medications and are unable to get any more, putting their health at risk.

In response to the diabetes crisis in Ukraine, Charlie has set up a new charitable organisation, ‘United with Ukraine’, to deliver essential supplies to Ukrainians with type 1 diabetes who are surrounded by conflict.

Speaking to Kent Live, Charlie said: “We need insulin, test strips and sweets. My partner Emma is type one diabetic, and she had a hypoglycaemic episode in the night and that’s when we have to have sugar to get those glucose levels back up to a safe level.

“I went downstairs to grab some orange juice and started pulling stuff out the cupboard that had carbs in it to find some combo to sort it out and that’s when I thought, ‘what would I do if I was in Ukraine?”

He added: “If you have a hypo and you’re diabetic, you have about six hours of consciousness left and that’s really optimistic because diabetes works quite quickly.

“Then you’d have to be hospitalised if you don’t treat it, you don’t just come back out of it, that’s what happens without food if you’re a diabetic.

“If you don’t have insulin, you’ll be comatose within five to seven days, and you cannot get better without insulin.”

Type One Style is an organisation centred around type 1 diabetes and offers both mental health support and products to those living with the condition.

I am a type 1 diabetic and have recently been taken off Lantus Solo Star and started on Tresiba. I have 15 unused, unopened, in date, Lantus Solostar pens. How do I get them over to you from Northern Ireland and away to Ukraine where they can do some good?
