A new continuous glucose monitoring system helping to predict future glucose levels in people with diabetes has been unveiled to thousands of healthcare professionals at a leading diabetes conference.

Roche Diagnostics showcased its Accu-Chek® SmartGuide continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system for the first time at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference (April 22-24) this week in Liverpool.

Earlier this month, the Accu-Chek® SmartGuide CGM system became reimbursable on the NHS, giving adults with diabetes easier access to the technology.

The Accu-Chek® SmartGuide is the first artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled CGM system in the UK capable of predicting nighttime hypoglycaemia.

Using AI, the system analyses glucose patterns to forecast levels over the next 30 minutes, two hours and overnight. Users are prompted to take action if their glucose is expected to drop below a safe range, enabling them to take action and prevent low blood glucose.

A water-resistant sensor worn on the back of the upper arm sends readings to a smartphone app every five minutes, providing real-time glucose data and a continuously updated forecast of future trends.

“We had such an energising few days at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference in Liverpool,” said Claire Marriott, Medical Affairs Lead.

They added: “We were really encouraged by the level of interest – our symposium was standing room only, and the conversations that followed showed just how much appetite there is for innovation in this space.”

Entitled ‘Continuous Glucose Management – The Power of Prediction’, the symposium was led by Amy Jolley, Lead Diabetes Specialist Dietitian at the Salford Care Organisation.

Claire continued: “On our stand, we showcased Accu-Chek SmartGuide’s predictive features – including 30-minute, two-hour and seven-hour overnight insights – highlighting how they can support more proactive diabetes management.

“But beyond the technology itself, what really stood out in our conversations was the everyday reality for people living with diabetes. The constant decisions, the mental load – it can be a lot. What’s exciting about SmartGuide is its potential to ease some of that burden, helping people feel more confident, day and night, and giving them the freedom to focus a little less on their condition and a little more on living their lives.”

Claire concluded: “It was brilliant to connect with so many people across the diabetes community – both familiar faces and new – and to hear such thoughtful perspectives on where care needs to go next.”
