A pioneering technology company hoping to win the race to develop non-invasive blood glucose monitoring has showcased its “life-changing” needle-free device at a leading worldwide conference.

Monmouthshire-based Afon Technology exhibited at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 83rd Scientific Sessions to promote Glucowear® – a pain-free continuous blood glucose sensor tipped to transform the lives of those with the condition by removing the need for needles when monitoring blood sugar levels.

During the renowned conference in San Diego, Dr Sabih Chaudhry, CEO of Afon Technology, and Dr John Shillingford, Regulatory and Clinical Director of Afon Technology, showcased data from recent clinical trials to more than 100 clinicians, academics, researchers, competitors, key opinion leaders and those working for medtech companies.

The Glucowear® sensor sits on the inside of your wrist and sends real-time information to a companion app displaying your blood glucose trends and alerting you to high/low glucose levels as well as personal health trends.

Dr Chaudhry said: “Exhibiting at the American Diabetes Association conference for the first time was a pivotal moment for Afon Technology.

“As the top international diabetes event, the ADA meeting has allowed us to elevate Afon’s profile and make a resounding impact in the global diabetes industry.”

He added: “We were honoured to have the opportunity to showcase our innovation on a global scale.

“This cutting-edge technology has the potential to be truly life-changing, empowering people to manage their glucose levels with unprecedented ease and convenience.”

Dr Shillingford said: “Our experience of exhibiting at the ADA conference was remarkable. The stand received an incredible amount of footfall, with a large number of attendees expressing keen interest in what we are doing.

“It’s been inspiring to witness the genuine curiosity and enthusiasm from the people seeking innovative solutions for diabetes management.”

He added: “We also had the opportunity to engage with several global competitors who showed a clear interest in our advancements.

“It was evident that they are keeping a close eye on Afon Technology, recognising the potential impact of our non-invasive wearable blood glucose sensor.”

He concluded: “This positive reception further solidifies our belief in the importance and relevance of our work, and we are excited to continue pushing the boundaries of diabetes technology.”

Afon Technology focuses on working towards the future of blood glucose monitoring which will benefit people around the world with diabetes.

Unlike current devices, the Glucowear® sensor will measure blood glucose levels in real-time without the need to penetrate the skin at all, making it easier to manage the condition, reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and limb amputations.

Companies such as Apple, Samsung and Google are rumoured to have been trying to develop non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, but so far none have been successful. Afon Technology hopes to win the race to this important milestone.

Preliminary clinical research gives people with diabetes hope that such a device could become a reality in the near future.
