Monogenic diabetes discussed in new podcast episode
The landscape of monogenic diabetes in the UK has been explored in the latest episode of Talking Diabetes.
Professor Andrew Hattersley, Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Exeter, discussed the importance of genetic testing for monogenic diabetes.
He said: “The crucial thing to do is to get the test done. But we can’t afford to test everybody with diabetes using genetics as there are four million people with diabetes and probably 20,000 people with monogenic diabetes.
“So, the problem is that the vast majority of the people you see in hospital have type 1 diabetes and in general practice will have type 2 diabetes. You have got to try and pick out the monogenic ones from that.”
Professor Hattersley hosts the One in Six Billion podcast alongside Professor Maggie Shepherd. This podcast aims to inform about all aspects of genetics in diabetes but particularly concentrating on the unusual genetic forms of diabetes.
The Talking Diabetes series features leading healthcare professionals and academics as they share their expertise and thoughts on the hot topics from the world of diabetes.
